Two Piece Contemporary Iron Sculpture

NZ$2,120.00

Two contemporary garden sculptures, together creating a unique piece for the garden.  These sculptures were designed and hand-forged at the renowned West Dean College of Arts and Conservation in Sussex.

West Dean College of Arts and Conservation is on West Dean Estate, West Sussex. This college was established in 1971 by the Edward James Foundation.
In 1964  Edward James (1907-1984, a huge admirer of the Surrealist movement) conveyed his Estate, West Dean, to the Edward James Foundation.  He was concerned that certain arts, particularly the techniques of the craftsmen, would be lost so suggested that his Estate be set up as an educational community where the techniques of craftsmanship could be preserved and taught, while restoring old work and creating new art works.  West Dean College is a centre for the study of conservation, arts, crafts, writing, gardening and music.

Contemporary garden sculptures bring a beautiful sense of contrast and character to the garden.  They add year round interest and enhance the atmosphere of a space.  The garden is elevated from a planted space to an area that encourages you to slow down, notice details and engage with the garden differently. Sculptures look striking in all light conditions, morning light, rain, shadows and evening sun constantly change the appearance of the work.
This particular set bring structure and movement, are quietly striking, modern but timeless and they create a free form sculptural focal point amongst garden plantings.  Other areas these pieces would work effortlessly would be at the end of a tree lined walk, hillside or open lawn/meadow space.  You could also place them in different rooms of the garden, separately, while continuing to link the areas.  Ultimately you get to design the final look.

The paint patina is predominately Yellow.  The colour is time worn/weathered in places with the original colours showing through in places.  Their original colours were Red for one and Green for the other. Stop, Go?

Their design begins with cast iron Steeple Finials and are grounded by a long iron spike underneath iron cross-bars that are also spiked.  They sit securely but can be easily moved anytime you wish to create a new focal point.
