These are something quite special.
Not only do they have a fabulous variety of different motif details but their origin is something quite special as well.
They were discovered in the undergrowth of the original Kahuranaki Station homestead garden on Rochfort Road off Kahuranaki Road in the Tuki Tuki valley, Hawkes Bay.
They were uncovered from an overgrown area by the Turnbull's who were the owners at the time of the home which had been rebuilt near site of the original homestead. They were painted white a few years later and then placed under the verandah out of the weather.
They are a unique pair with the details depicting Roman Emperors, Acanthus Leaves, Vines (on the underside of the Egg and Dart Rim), Face Mask Handles and decorative band above the flared fluted column sitting on the square base.
They're a great size with a wide open top.
The makers mark PCM inside a circle is found on the inside of the urn near the top.
We were approached late last year by Mr and Mrs Turnbull's daughter who was selling on behalf of her mother that had moved to a retirement village. Mrs Turnbull wanted them to go on to someone who would appreciate their style and history. Very rarely do we buy within NZ but as these have such a local provenance we could not say no.
This is a rare opportunity to become the next custodians of this unique pair of beautiful ornate urns.
